"International Astronomical Plate Digitization" Selected as an Outstanding Case at the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit

On November 6, 2025 (today), the World Internet Conference Wuzhen Summit opened smoothly. The "International Astronomical Plate Digitization" project, led by the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was recommended through selection within CAS and has been named an outstanding case in the Practice Cases of Jointly Building a Community with a Shared Future in Cyberspace for 2025 at the World Internet Conference. The case has also been released on the official website of the conference.

Marking the 10th anniversary of President Xi Jinping's proposal of the "community with a shared future in cyberspace" initiative, this selection fully reflects the international community's recognition of the value of digital technologies in preserving scientific heritage and promoting global scientific research cooperation.

Astronomical photographic plates, recording starry skies from over a century ago, are precious "time archives" of humanity's exploration of the universe. However, these plates are currently facing risks of damage and information loss. Since 2009, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory has centered on modern high-precision technologies and independently developed four submicron-level measurement devices. It first completed the digitization of domestic night observation plates, then responded to the initiative of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to collaborate with astronomical institutions from Uzbekistan, Italy, Japan and other countries in advancing the high-precision digitization of global astronomical photographic plates. Through digital technologies, the project authentically restores the starry skies of a century ago, transforming these scientific and cultural heritage into "digital assets."

Looking ahead, the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory will continue to promote the construction of an international astronomical plate data platform, further integrate global centennial astronomical observation achievements, and provide irreplaceable long-term data support for humanity to trace celestial evolution trajectories and explore the profound mysteries of the universe. It will make digital technologies an important link connecting the past and future of human astronomical research.
