The Galactic center workshop 2009---The Galactic Center: A window to the Nuclear Environment of Disc Galaxies---was held in Hope Hotel of Shanghai, from Oct. 19-23. The conference was co-chaired by Prof. Feng Yuan of our institute and Prof. Daniel Wang from University of Massachusetts (US) and Prof. Mark Morris in The University of California, Los Angeles (US).

There are about 130 participants from different countries in the world including China, the US, Europe, Japan, Australia and so on. Among them, over 110 people come from outside of China. Research results in various aspects of Galactic center research during the past three years were reported. The lectures include 5 overview, 25 invited and 50 contributed talks. A one-hour panel discussion is arranged everyday. Prof. Yuan presented an overview talk entitled "Accretion and ejection in Sgr A*".

The conference consists of the following 6 sessions:
1) PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES IN THE CENTRAL MOLECULAR ZONE
2) STAR FORMATION IN CIRCUMNUCLEAR REGIONS
3) STELLAR DYNAMICS IN THE PRESENCE OF THE GALACTIC BLACK HOLE
4) THE SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLE: ACCRETION, SPIN AND STRONG GRAVITY
5) HIGH-ENERGY DIAGNOSTICS OF GALACTIC NUCLEAR ACTIVITY
6) SMBH AND STELLAR FEEDBACK ON THE NUCLEAR ENVIRONMENT

This workshop belongs to the conference series in the field of Galactic center research which are held once every three years. The aim of the conferences is to summarize the main progresses and communicate and stimulate new ideas in this filed.

The conference was sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Natural Science Foundation of China, Shanghai Government, and the US National Radio Astronomical Observatory. The US Natural Science Foundation also supplies special financial support to the participants coming from the US.
