Abstract:
The morphology of fresh impact craters on the lunar surface reflects the physical properties of the impactor and the lunar surface, and thus has important implications for understanding the formation process of impact craters. Previous morphological studies of lunar impact craters have usually been conducted within an axisymmetric geometric assumption, and therefore cannot capture the detailed textural features of crater morphology. In contrast, topographic spectral analysis is a more powerful morphological research tool, as it can reveal morphological variations of impact craters at different spatial scales. This talk will introduce how to calculate the one-dimensional power spectral densities of the continuous ejecta blanket, crater rim, and crater floor boundaries of fresh lunar impact craters, as well as the two-dimensional power spectral densities of the elevations of the continuous ejecta blanket, crater wall, and crater floor. Based on the obtained topographic power spectral densities of impact craters, simulated fresh lunar impact craters with realistic textural features were generated and integrated into the lunar surface terrain evolution model CraterMaker. At the end of the talk, future applications of CraterMaker will be discussed.
