Title: Dynamic Evolution of CSOs

Speaker: Prof. Willem Baan

Affiliation: ASTRON, Netherlands Institute for Radio Astronomy

Time: 10am, (Thursday) April 28, 2011

Location: Small Conference Room, 3rd floor

Abstract:
Compact Symmetric Objects are extragalactic radio sources that have recently started their activity. They are the youngest in the large family of GPS, CSS, FRII and FRI radio sources. Their dynamical evolution is of particular interest because they provide the basic experimental verification of the physical models that explain their evolution. VLBI data for a sample of CSOs covering a time span of as much as 15 years reveals details about the outward motions of the radio lobes and individual jet components and provides new understanding of the nature and spectral properties of the sources. We will consider the evolution of the sample CSOs in the context of the whole family of sources.
